What is the ERDF and why should you care?
ERDF stands for European Regional Development Fund. In plain terms: it is money from the European Union that reaches the Canary Islands to help modernise the economy and build a cleaner, more sustainable future.
In 2026, the Regional Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Canary Islands Government has launched a grant call with a total budget of €18,461,384, aimed at helping individuals, businesses and public bodies improve their energy efficiency or install solar panels — paying far less than you might expect.
The response was immediate: within just two days of opening, the Government had already received over 800 applications, exceeding €7 million in funding requests. The message is clear: funds run out fast, and the early bird gets the grant.
Who can apply for these grants?
The good news is that the call is open to a wide range of applicants:
- Private individuals and homeowners
- Businesses of any size (from freelancers to large corporations)
- Residents’ associations and homeowner communities
- Energy communities
- Third-sector entities (associations, foundations, NGOs…)
- Local councils and island councils (Cabildos)
In short: if you pay an electricity bill in the Canary Islands and want to reduce it, you most likely qualify for this grant.
How much money can I receive?
The grant percentage varies depending on who you are. Below are the maximum aid rates:
| Type of beneficiary | Grant percentage |
|---|---|
| Residents’ associations and energy communities | Up to 60% |
| Private individuals and third-sector entities | Up to 50 % |
| Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) | Up to 45 % |
| Large companies | Up to 30 % |
| Local councils and Cabildos | Up to 100 % |
Example for a household: If you install solar panels in your home for €8,000, you could receive up to €4,000 in grant funding (50%), paying only €4,000 out of pocket.
Example for an SME: A medium-sized business investing €20,000 in a photovoltaic self-consumption system could receive up to €9,000 (45%), recovering the investment much sooner.
In addition, the maximum grant per applicant is €90,000, which opens the door to larger-scale projects.
What types of installations are covered?
The grants are primarily designed for photovoltaic self-consumption installations of up to 100 kW, but they also cover other measures:
- Solar photovoltaic installations for electricity generation
- Energy storage systems (batteries), always alongside a renewable installation
- Air-source and ground-source heat pumps for heating and hot water
- Building energy efficiency improvements (insulation, windows, LED lighting…)
- Modernisation of industrial processes (for businesses)
- Integrated projects combining several of the above measures
The installation must be new or a complete upgrade, and it must not have started before 1 January 2024 to be eligible.
When and how do I apply?
The application window for the 2026 call was open from 26 May to 22 June 2026. Applications must be submitted exclusively online through the Electronic Office of the Canary Islands Government (Procedure 10872):
sede.gobiernodecanarias.org – Procedure no. 10872
Important: Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis (non-competitive procedure). This means the first applicant to meet all requirements receives funding first. Do not wait until the last day.
What documents do I need to prepare?
To avoid last-minute surprises, here is a basic list of what is typically required:
- National ID / Passport (or company tax ID for businesses)
- Completed grant application submitted through the electronic office
- Detailed installation quote from an authorised installer
- Technical project report (system sizing, installation diagram, location plan)
- Certificate confirming works have not yet started
- For businesses: documentation proving company size (to determine the applicable grant percentage)
At Ultravioleta Solar S.L. we prepare all the necessary technical documentation so your application is fully supported and there is no reason for rejection.
Can it be combined with other incentives?
Yes, in many cases ERDF grants are compatible with other benefits, such as:
- IBI (property tax) rebate: Up to 50% in municipalities such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas for 3–5 years.
- ICIO (construction tax) rebate: Up to 95% in some municipalities.
- Income tax (IRPF) deduction: Up to 40% of the installation cost in your annual tax return.
Combining all available incentives can dramatically reduce the actual cost of your installation. In some cases, total savings can exceed 70% of the initial investment.
Why is now the best time to switch to solar energy?
The Canary Islands enjoy one of the highest solar irradiation levels in all of Europe. Sunshine is never in short supply here, which means a photovoltaic installation in the islands generates more energy than virtually anywhere else in Spain.
Add to this the fact that electricity prices remain high, and that solar panels protect you from future tariff rises. With the current grants, the payback period can be reduced to just 3–5 years, while a photovoltaic installation has a useful life of 25 to 30 years.
The conclusion is simple: there has never been a better time to make the switch.
